Protect that Mailbox the easy way

by

989112_checking_the_mailAs I was reading this month’s Living the Country Life Magazine I saw many photos of how the mailbox was turned into a planter. I have tried some of the techniques myself when I lived in the country and actually had a box that my mail was placed in, but living in the city I now have a box on the inner wall of my walkway. I prefer the “in-the-door” slot really, but a mailbox was the next best thing.

When I think back on when I did have a box there were times when I would decorate the box for the holidays or even paint it or replace the post it sat on, only to go out the following day and vandals had been by to give me their own way of festive gestures by knocking it to the ground or a fallen tree branch destroyed all that my husband had been working on for a whole weekend.

While reading this magazine there was a subscriber that had written in to give an idea on protecting your mailbox from damage by installing hinges on the main post and attach the other side of the hinges to the support post. Then on the other side allow a spring to connect the two as well. So what you end up with is a hinges mailbox that will swing and give way if something would happen to hit it hard. The spring would allow for the box to come back to its original location.

I thought it was such a grand idea I wanted to share it with all who read Earthly Garden and those who happen to have the box issues causing them stress. To read more on protecting your mailbox, click here to visit Dave’s Garden and read other suggestions.
