More fall, Bird-Attracting Plants to Add to your Garden
• Coneflower (Echinacea spp.): Grows mostly upright and has seedy central cones which attract smaller seed eaters like goldfinches, sparrows, titmice, and juncos. Grows well in Zone 3 through 9 and needs full sun to light shade, as well as well-drained soil.
• Sumas (Rhus spp.): Has spiky red fruits that catch fruit eating bird’s eyes quickly such as robins, cardinals, and mockingbirds. The branches also offer perches for these birds to be out of harms way while they eat. Grows well in Zones 4 through 8 and needs full sun to partial shade, as well as a dry soil.
• Pine Tree (Pinus spp.): Has seed filled cones and truck teeming with insects as well, this tree attracts birds such as the pine warblers, pine siskin’s, pine grosbeaks, nuthatches, juncos, creeps, chickadees, and even mourning doves. The low hanging branches offer shelter for many of these and other birds as well. Mostly migratory birds will stay a short while. Grows well in Zone 2 through 9 and needs full sun and moist well-drained soil.
• Crab Apple (Malus spp.): Bares red, yellow and orange fruits that attract feeding for sap suckers, robins, jays, orioles, towhees, finches, sparrows, woodpeckers, and waxwings. The branches offer perches as well. Grows well in Zones 3 to 8 and needs full sun and moist to average soil.
• American Cranberry Viburnum (Viburnum trilobum): Gives shelter to shelter-seeking birds and feeds a whole variety of different winter winged friends. Grows well in Zones 3 to 9 and needs sum to partial shade and needs moist to well-drained soil. This is a great addition to anyone’s garden, flower bed or even lining a driveway or pathway.
