Growing fabulous Auriculas
The popularity of auriculas peaked in the 19th century and Thomas Jefferson was keen on them so much so that he grew them at his home in Virginia ‘Monticello’.
Auriculas really take off when you repot them every year. You can also divide them in the fall to bring even more color to your garden. Remove the shoots at the base and plant them in the soil and they will take root.
You can keep the plants in semi-shade during the color months, but hey must be placed in shade during the summer months.
The colors of the Auriculas can vary from bloom to bloom depending on what variety it is. Here is a list of the some the most beautiful Auriculas available to add to your garden this season.
1. ‘Gray Poupon’ (P. Auricula): These have mustard colored flower blooms and a bit of a chalky color on the leaves.
2. ‘Abuelita’ (P. Auricula): They have double flowers that can be a deep maroon color to even a light orange.
3. ‘Calypso’ (P. Auricula): These are the brightest variety of the Auriculas and can come in hot pink to yellow and they grow vigorously as well.
No matter what your garden holds and what it means to you, any garden isn’t complete without some variety of an Auricula blooming. They are easy to grow and can spread when you want them to just by taking a cutting. Add some to your garden this season and see how much color you can bring in.
