Although the fire season is upon us there are things you can do in your own landscape to help prevent your home from becoming a victim of fire damage. Here are some ideas to keep in mind when trying to prevent wild fires from taking about your dream.

More and more home owners are currently building their homes in areas of wild land-urban interface and even some are building homes in forest way in the mountains. With this building comes the fear of fire danger within your area. The best way to prevent your home from becoming a pile of ash is to create a defensible space or perimeter around your home. The area between your home and the fire can be slowed down when you add certain vegetation to slow the progress of fires.

The best way to prevent your home from going up in smoke is to use proper materials that won’t burn such as a roof or siding. Another way is to plant certain plants to help slow the fire and to help fire fighters when they need to get in and fight the fire as well. The best choice for this is fire-resistant plants such groundcovers and the best choices are listed below.

Fire Resistant Groundcovers:

1. Rock Cress (Aubrieta deltoidea): Height 3-8″ and Spread of about 10-15″

2. Carpet Bugleweed (Ajuga reptans): Height 4-10″ and Spread of about 12-18″

3. Kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi): Height 4-8″ and Spread of about 10-15″
