Fire season is upon us, is your landscape ready?
With the thought currently on the wild fires burning out of control in California, one has to think, “Could my home end up like that one day?” It isn’t hard to think that one day you could be like the hundreds of others that have been evacuated from the Santa Barbara area yesterday afternoon, but it could happen to any one of us.
Wild fire season from many areas starts mainly around the end of spring to the very early beginning of summer. Although here in the Pacific Northwest of Oregon the rain has been non stop for the last few days, wildfires can begin without notice.
Through the fire departments, volunteer and even paid fire fighters, there are many pamphlets and reading materials that are available through your local fire departments that can help you avoid potential wildfires from being set in the first place. One of the many pamphlets available to home owners is a way to keep your house from being a potential burning site and the tips it offers are more than common sense.
Other ways to avoid having your home destroyed by fires is to plant fire resistant plants throughout your landscape and yard. A few of them include perennials such as Trumpet Vine (Campis radicans). This vine can be attractive foliage to your landscape where it can cover fences and other arbors and trellises, but the best part is, it can help save you house when fire creeps near.
For the next few weeks, from the Fire Awareness Week through May 9th, and on till the end of the month of May, Earthly Garden will be targeting some of the best fire-resistant plants to have near your home. The installments will take up most of the month of May to prepare for fire danger season that will soon be near us before we know it. Check back to Earthly Garden frequently to see the days new set of fire resistant plants.
