Grow your Vaggies in Cold Frames
Wednesday, February 25th, 2009
Most of use grow with the main ingredients to a healthy garden like soil, sunlight, water and even a bit of patience, but there is another way to grow your plants and it actually saves you time, it’s called a cold frame.
Cold frames are a great gardening choice because they help keep the growing season still thriving even into the winter or late summer when the temperatures drop. You can grow and harvest lettuce, spinach, radishes, onions and other vegetable choices without much effort. Or at least little effort.
Many cold frames are weather resistant with a clear pain that can either be glass or polycarbonate plastic. The outer edges of the frame are metal, mostly aluminum or even steel. They are UV resistant and come in a variety of sizes to suit your needs. The cold frames in many gardening catalogs can run about $350 and under.
The best part about cold frame growing is you can have salad greens clear into after the first frost has passed. You can even find some cold frames that have a hinged lid that will allow for better access to your vegetables.
If you enjoy gardening but dread the fact that the growing season will soon end, give cold frames a try. You can spend money on one and it will pay for itself time and time again.
Vegetables are a must in anyone’s diet and if the fact of a large greenhouse frightens you, try cold frames. Start with the smaller size and work your way up to the larger size and share your bounty with the whole block.
