Build a Basic Birdhouse, Here’s how

1. Start with a 6×1x6 foot board and cut off a 30-inch length and rip those pieces in to 4-inches wide. Then cut the sides, bottom, cleat and predator guard (optional) from the 4-inch pieces. Use the remainder of the 1×6 from the back and the front.
2. Attach the components with 1 -1/4-inch galvanized nails or wood screws. Attach the sides to the back first, the slip the bottom between the sides, it will be snug, and screw or nail it into place.
3. Use a hole saw and drill holes in the front and into the predator guard too. The front holes center should be 7-inches from the front bottom. Make sure the holes are lined up when your attached the guard in front then affix the front to the sides.
4. The brace and cleat, which you need to attach to the tops underside, helps to hold the removable roof in place. You want the cleat to fit pretty snug just behind the house’s front panel when the roof is in place where it should be. Position the cleat to the underside of the roof, about 3-1/8 to 3-1/4 inches from the front. And then screw it into place.
5. Use one 1-1/2 inch wood screw to attach the roof to the front piece, this way you can easily remove it later. The gap between the roof and the sides are for ventilation when the bird or bat, in some cases, will have air inside the house. Drill a quarter-inch mounting hole in the back, three-quarters of an inch from the top and another three-quarter of an inch from the bottom of the house. You can then stain or paint you house. Then hang on a tree to where it is high enough off the ground from predators.
